Papua New Guinea comprises half the island of New Guinea, the second largest island in the world, and approximately 600 outlying islands. The many different environments, from tropical islands, to vast wetlands and rainforests, to mountains reaching nearly 15,000 feet, contributed to the isolation of small groups of people for generations, and thus, the extraordinary variety of ethnic groups still found today.
